Tess is a director, dramaturg and writer from Leeds. She works across theatre, film and audio. She is interested in how the roles we play change us and the world. Her work is playful, political and a great night out.
She has directed shows at Sheffield Theatres, Leeds Playhouse, CAST, Theatre Royal Wakefield, National Theatre, Hull Truck and The Yard, as well as touring work to theatres and community venues across the UK.
Tess is a keen dramaturg and co-creator. She has co-created young people and community shows and podcasts for Almeida, Southwark Playhouse, Chapel FM and Young Vic.
Her writing includes Say Yes to Tess, a musical about her experience of standing in the 2017 general election with songs by Harry Blake.
Tess runs the National Theatre’s playwriting regional hubs, has been script reader for Leeds Playhouse and Sheffield Theatres as well as working with writers in script development.
She has worked as an Assistant Director for Leeds Playhouse, English Touring Theatre, The Globe and assisted internationally with the Wooster Group in New York, the Maxim Gorky in Berlin and Stanislavskiy Electrotheatre in Moscow.
